2009 To-Read List!

Hey everyone!

Let me quickly introduce myself, my name is Manasa and I am the chapter leader of UCLA! :) Nourish as I have learned has quite a variety of unique individuals who really want to make a difference and often what we learn in college isn't enough to really keep us to date with the on-goings of the development world.

So I've decided to start a discussion/post in which I encourage you all to post books/articles that you believe would be of interest to this group - from books that you are currently reading, to ones that you've heard are fantastics please post away!

Hey Manasa! Let me know how Development as Freedom goes. I'm thinking about that after the current set I'm working through.

Also, I highly recommend reading The White Man's Burden in tandem with The End of Poverty since they represent two very different mentalities towards approaching development. Another great one to read with those two is The Bottom Billion, which superbly outlines where help is needed most.

Last but not least: books are great, but so are videos! They often communicate the same concepts in a faster, more easily digestible format. I recommend www.ted.com. They have an entire theme called 'Rethinking Poverty' which has great talks from allstars around the world. It is representative of multiple competing viewpoints from very intelligent, experienced individuals. Great stuff. Definitely check out Bjorn Lumborg, Hans Roslin and Jacqueline Novogratz for starters.

I'm about to start Banker for the Poor, too. I'll try to remember to write you for feedback if anything jumps out at me since you are also reading it.

So did anyone else just ask for books this year? Here's what the 1st part of 2009 has in store for me as far as development literature goes. I've started each in parallel out of impatience, and each is shaping up to be great:

Inequality Reexamined - Amartya Sen

Globalization and its Discontents - Joseph E. Stiglitz

The Wealth of Nations - Adam Smith (gotta get back to the roots!)
